The Bible is Written from and Early standpoint

Have you ever read the bible? if you have you will notice the only knowledge of animals or planets comes from what they knew then instead of what could have been discovered later, They had no knowledge of dinosaurs thus dinosaurs are not mentioned and if the bible is true and man lived to witness dinosaurs (despite huge piles of evidence to the contrary) then why are they not mentioned.

Also other planets are not mentioned. This seems pretty conveniant to me.

The bible is not meant t be taken literary... they are stories to learn from.

I believe it's a fictional book, myself.

i think the bible is outdated and written for a society that no longer exists. I agree with you guys, it's not meant to be taken literally. but that's not a big surprise coming from me.

I've never read the bible, my evolutionary biology prof said by the end of the course, no one in class will believe in god. or the big bang theory. I don't follow any kind of religion really.

Since I do not know you Fairmoon It can hardly be a supirse.

But I do not agree with you I think Christians would love us to take the bible seriously

My feelings about it are somewhere in between Rox's and Moon's. I say, even if every word was written (or transcribed) with the best of intentions, and by people who sincerely believed (at the time) that they were passing on God's word as they understood it verbatim, and without editoializing or editing from dramatic effect, (which is doubtful and yet no slam on any of the folks throughout the centuries who did their best to pass on what they thought they knew) then, if you believe in "a" God powerful enough to be a single Parent-like creative entity responsible for the lives of everyone who's ever lived, and will ever live, and that he started with nothing and will be here for as long as time exists; then to limit his (or her) power to what's said there in the bad translations of this ancient text - is just plain insulting.

And if you don't believe in a God similar to the one I tried to describe above, then it's a moot point anyway.

Either way, in my humble opinion, the Bible is no more than a quasai-religious history book from which we can take as much or as little as will help us make it through the day. The second we allow it to be used as justification for certain people to get their rocks off by treating people who feel differently than they do about it's authoritative significance with regards to individual rights and actions, is the moment we all best bend over and kiss our butts goodbye.

Try reading the Bible first,As for Dinosaurs the book of Job does mantions Leviathans and mammoths.Did you know that the people of the scientific community first started accepting Earth as round a few centuries ago....well they could have had a look at the bible and found that out 2500 years ago.
Something else Bible is the only Book of antiquity that has more copies of it dating right from its being written than any other book of antiquity. The only book which even comes close is Homers Lliad which has about 650 copies and that too dating more that a few centuries after the occurence actually happened.Bible has more that 14000 copies dating right from the early first century when it was first written, now this is the New Testament and the Old Testament is dated even earlier. Historically and archaelogically nothing that has ever been found has ever contradicted the Bible it has only strenghtened its Authorship. If you actually read about the historicity of the Bible you will be surprised that all the questions you have against it will not even stand up to it. Try it sometime you will be surprised.

Take care

The Bible is a tremendous book, but it was never intended to be a book of science. It is a revelation of God's love. Genesis, chapters 1-11, tell the frustrating and sad story of man reaching up to God. From Genesis 12 through Revelation, the story is of God reaching down to man. The apex of the story is God's expression of Himself through Jesus of Nazareth.

It's a tremendous book. I encourage you to secure a readable translation, such as The Message or New Living Translation, and make it a point to read it through. Even if you do not accept the premise of the book, it is still worthwhile reading. But, be forewarned, many have undertaken the reading of the Bible with a skeptical mind and have become believers through the process.

Yes Pastor I think we all agree it is not a book of scienece, but I consider the Bible lucky that it was so vague or it may have mentioned something that gave it away. Oh wait it allready has, the bible says that earth is merely 6000 years old.......Just look at some carbon dating records and you will see the number is closer to 200 billion.

comments to Kupov and your response to PastorDave: do you believe everything people tell you? what a shame! If you studied..and I mean studied the bible you would find there are mentions of mammoths (dinosaurs) in the bible. You would find the exact age of the earth. You would find the answers you are searching for to free will. You must first be willing to seek the answers to the questions you are asking.

The Bible is very relevant for today and our society. It is to be taken very literally and we can go and find answers for any question we have. There are two choices....to believe or not. That choice determines where you will spend eternity. You agree you are mind, body and soul...then you mind and body will die one day and you soul.....well, where will it go?
heaven or hell.....you decide? Jesus' ministry was about life and death...believe in Him...have eternal life....refuse to believe in Him....you chose eternal death....I'm thinking It's much better to believe. :)

A very snide remark preceptlady and no I do not beleive everything people tell me, however i undertand that Christians know more about the bible then me so I do not argue with them when they tell me about the bible.

Response to Kupov: Not meant to be snide, just truthful. Why try to demean something you say you have never read that much of? Shouldn't you try reading and understanding it first?

Just curious?

Kupov,
You should go to the site rae.org and check out the assumptions taken when using carbon dating.

response to preceptlady, So everytime someone tells me something I should disbeleive it? so if my history teacher says the crusades happened I should not beleive it?

3 quick points.

- the bible never says the earth is 6000 years old.

- carbon dating is incapable of rendering such data as a 200 billion year old earth. its half life precludes it from revealing anything earlier than about 500k years ago.

- if you really want to address biblical issues it would benefit you to read it. reading it doesnt mean you agree with it - but it helps inform your statements.

quick correction - carbon dating is not used for anything over 100k. i guessed 500k based on memory but i missed it - the number is in fact much smaller.

No I asked my Christian friends and it does indeed say the earth is merely 7000 (not 6000 sorry) years old, he even showed me the scripture.

It might help you Christians to read your own Bible more

Please have your friend tell you where that scripture verse is that says the earth is 7000 yrs old. I would like to read that. It could be that they are just taking a year/date that is put there on a speculation of when a certain book of the Bible was written.. but would love to read it if it is there!

In Genesis it does say that God created the heavens & the earth & all that is in it in 7 days.. Whether "days" is an actual 24 hour day or not is debated by many. Some say, by using another verse, that 1 day actually equalled 1000 years. Others believe that there is a gap in the creation that accounted for thousands of years.. but I still have yet to know of an actual verse that says the earth is X years old. If they can give you that.. I want to research that! Also, on the carbon dating method -- if there was a great flood, as described in Genesis, then that would really jack with the carbon dating.. I sure don't have or know all of the answers but I do like to research to find out.. check out this link.. http://www.answersingenesis.org/docs2002/carbon_dating.asp

Too many things are in the Bible that are not meant literally to take them all that way. It has to be examined/researched.
